Description

How We Built This? Series provides a forum for assessment leaders to share their sustainable assessment processes within AEFIS, in a spin-off active dialogue inspired by NPR’s “How I Built This” podcast series.

Assessment is defined, collected and utilized differently at every institution. In addition, assessment professionals advance to these roles from diverse backgrounds and even different career trajectories. Yet, one characteristic remains constant: having an assessment management process, which stakeholders recognize, contribute to and own is key. Learn from assessment professionals from two-year and four-year institutions across the country as they discuss their uniquely sustainable assessment processes. These assessment ‘edupreneurs’ share their assessment stories using technology to provide a transparent feedback loop for continuous improvement and student success.

Joseph Hawk, Executive Director of Assessment & Accreditation, Drexel University

I am an experienced higher education administrator with a passion for asking questions and using data and research to guide improvement. I work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and fine-tune institutional effectiveness systems, including assessment of student learning outcomes, general education, and program review. One of the most rewarding aspects of my current role is the opportunity to serve as a campus "consultant" by providing guidance and resources to program directors and unit leads, and empowering them to conduct meaningful assessment of their programs.

Dr. Colin Suchland, Chair, Learning Outcomes Assessment Team, Professor of Sociology, Lincoln Land Community College

Dr. Colin E. Suchland holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. As a tenured professor at Lincoln Land Community College, he has served as President of the Faculty Senate and (now) Chair of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Team. Suchland’s academic interests include critical pedagogy, digital media studies, generational studies, social inequalities, and urban communities. He is a proud member of the American Sociological Association, the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology, the Midwest Sociological Society, and the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education. He also is the recipient of an AEFIS Partner Award for his role in piloting new assessment processes at LLCC in the past three years. A frequent conference presenter and keynote speaker at regional and national symposiums, Suchland has a passion for higher education and his undergraduate students. He has been a full-time college instructor for more than a decade, receiving extensive training in online course design. A working print and digital journalist for many years, Suchland continues to apply photojournalistic skills to his primary research.
