Description

How We Built This? Series provides a forum for educational leaders to share their sustainable processes and best practices in leading assessment, student success, and other initiatives at their institution in a spin-off active dialogue inspired by NPR’s “How I Built This” podcast series.

According to Educause surveys as cited by Cohn, J. (2021), fall 2020 students reported that they had meaningful experiences across all learning environments —including online. Yet, learners cited that their most positive experiences came from student-instructor interaction rather than the type of learning environment itself. How instructors and students intentionally planned their class time, and the amount of feedback and direct interaction that occurred, mattered more than the use of technology.

Amidst the changes caused by the pandemic, institutions are becoming more appreciative of universal design for learning (UDL) strategies to support accessibility of learning and learning utility. UDL is helping to transform faculty into change agents essential for this digital world of education and instruction, serving as champions for student success.

In this episode of How We Built This? leaders in assessment and advocates for student and faculty accessibility will provide context that will help you answer key questions about what your students need, how you can provide resources and apply strategies to support what students need, and ignite thought leadership about how assessment can be an on-ramp to individualized learning.

Presenters

Ms. Tracy Kaiser-Goebel, Director of Educational Effectiveness, Montgomery County Community College

I began my career in higher education in 1997, as an adjunct instructor.  While working in this role, I developed an interest in academic assessment.  This led me to expand my focus and accept a position as an Educational Coordinator in 2004, to learn and engage in academic assessment, working with Disability Services on accommodations and course differentiation, as well as curriculum mapping/development.  A lifelong learner, these experiences helped me develop a strong connection with the needs of today's college faculty and students, and a broad view of best practices in planning and implementing continuous improvements.

Dr. Colin Suchland, Chair, Learning Outcomes Assessment Team, Professor of Sociology, Lincoln Land Community College

Dr. Colin E. Suchland holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. As a tenured professor at Lincoln Land Community College, he has served as President of the Faculty Senate and (now) Chair of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Team. Suchland’s academic interests include critical pedagogy, digital media studies, generational studies, social inequalities, and urban communities. He is a proud member of the American Sociological Association, the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology, the Midwest Sociological Society, and the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education. He also is the recipient of an AEFIS Partner Award for his role in piloting new assessment processes at LLCC in the past three years. A frequent conference presenter and keynote speaker at regional and national symposiums, Suchland has a passion for higher education and his undergraduate students. He has been a full-time college instructor for more than a decade, receiving extensive training in online course design. A working print and digital journalist for many years, Suchland continues to apply photojournalistic skills to his primary research.
