Hands on HIPs: Understanding the Student Outcomes from the Students’ Perspective

Description

High-Impact Practices (HIPs) hold the promise of increasing student achievement, engagement, satisfaction, and persistence.

The research presented here uses stakeholder participation from the critical theory of communication in organizations to enlist students in actively designing their educational experiences in Introduction to Sociology.

Using assessment tools (including a pre- post-survey and Comprehensive Learner Record) along with a qualitative analysis of data, the researchers hope to demonstrate meaningful gains in

1) students’ abilities to “Think Like A Sociologist,” and

2) students’ own self-efficacy related to personal and career goals.

Participants in this session will learn how to implement HIPs and CLR.

Presenters

Dr. Colin Suchland, Chair, Learning Outcomes Assessment Team, Professor of Sociology, Lincoln Land Community College

Dr. Colin E. Suchland holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. As a tenured professor at Lincoln Land Community College, he has served as President of the Faculty Senate and (now) Chair of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Team. Suchland’s academic interests include critical pedagogy, digital media studies, generational studies, social inequalities, and urban communities. He is a proud member of the American Sociological Association, the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology, the Midwest Sociological Society, and the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education. He also is the recipient of an AEFIS Partner Award for his role in piloting new assessment processes at LLCC in the past three years. A frequent conference presenter and keynote speaker at regional and national symposiums, Suchland has a passion for higher education and his undergraduate students. He has been a full-time college instructor for more than a decade, receiving extensive training in online course design. A working print and digital journalist for many years, Suchland continues to apply photojournalistic skills to his primary research.

Suzanne Carbonaro, Director of Academic Partnerships, AEFIS

Suzanne Carbonaro, M.Ed, MS, CE School Administrator, is the Director of Academic Partnerships at AEFIS. Suzanne has 27 years experience in higher education teaching, curriculum design, assessment and leadership. Most recently, Suzanne served as the Director of Assessment at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences where she designed the real-time assessment process for the newly implemented competency-driven doctor of pharmacy curriculum. She came to USciences from Rider University where she served as Director of Assessment and Strategic Partnerships at the College of Education. Here she redesigned their assessment process and managed over a million dollars in grants. Suzanne has led successful self-studies and re-accreditation efforts for the doctor of pharmacy and teacher and leader education programs. She is a proud member of the team who successfully received the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) 2019 Award for Excellence in Assessment. Suzanne was invited to present her research and development of Comprehensive Learner Records (CLRs) to IMS Global at the 2018 Learning Analytics Summit, 2019 IMS Global Digital Credentials Summit and was a finalist for Learning Impact Awards at the Leadership Institute in May 2019. She received the USciences 2018 Founder’s Day Award for Innovation and has presented at AALHE (2018, 2019, 2020), Drexel Assessment Conference (2018, 2019, 2020), IUPUI (2018, 2019, 2020), AACP (2019) as well as regional assessment conferences, and the Competency-Based Education Network (2019, 2020).
